Light and Shadow, Take 2 by shesnapped

Light and Shadow, Take 2

From my get pushed partner this week: pick a mundane object in your house ... find some random light (a desk lamp, sun coming in the window, flashlight, candlelight)... and set up a shot paying attention to how you are using the light and what the shadows are doing... practice making the most of available light...

Taken on 1/30/15, posted to next open slot. Used the same mundane object, location and time of day as the photo posted on 1/27/15. Northy recommended tripod, manual, and adjusting shutter speed to get detail in the candle holder and still keep the shadows strong. I did all of that, and her advice really seems to have paid off. There's a glare in the shadow of the candle that is coming from the top of the radiator. In order to get rid of that glare, I would have had to cover the radiator with something non-reflective, but I would have lost the shadow of the candle holder legs going across the top of the radiator. I turned the candle holder around in an effort to get the best shadow shape, and didn't realize the real candle was off center in the holder. The whole shadow shows here, and I really like the golden light, and definitely love that the holder shows up better, but I'm not sure the photo works compositionally. I think the object needed to be closer to the shadow. When I compare this shot to the first one I took, which I was kind of impressed with, I'm shocked at the difference! (maybe even a little embarrassed?) In post processing (LR), I turned the exposure up by .5, the contrast up by 7, and the 4 sliders below that were all slid by a value of 6 or less.

Please forgive my absence these past couple weeks. I've been beyond blessed to have been able to spend 11 days with the new babies! Obviously, they consumed my every waking moment and many of my sleeping moments. I took a zillion pictures and will fill in the missing days with those pics as soon as I get caught up with all the work I've missed at the office and with personal clients. Please check backwards in my Jan calendar and see the babies once I get them up! And I WILL be looking at everything I've missed from all of you in the coming days as well!
Love this image with the shadows in the background. How are the twins doing? :)

Great shadow - the wider shape and the light almost looks like burning sunlight!

love these two shots; I think it's the dusty brown/yellow that is so soothing.

Nice experiment on this and the previous. I would have to say the elongated shadow here adds more interest for me. I like this one.
