Buhl Park Casino by skipt07

Buhl Park Casino

From 1907 through 1911, Frank H. Buhl acquired many tracts of land in Hickory Township (Hermitage, PA) to form Buhl Farm. Frank Buhl’s stated purpose for acquiring these lands was to create a park for the benefit and enjoyment of the public. Buhl developed the F. H. Buhl Farm. The 300-acre site included an 11-acre artificial lake complete with a sand beach. Picnic groves, pavilions, benches, playgrounds, 10 tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, a football field and 1,000-seat grandstand were among the amenities. All of these were free and open to the public. Over four miles of roadways were built to provide access to all areas of the park and the creation of an artificial lake constructed by William McIntyre. Seven wells were drilled to provide the best quality drinking water and George Rettig, a landscape architect from Cleveland, was hired to work closely with Frank Buhl to provide the overall park design of Buhl Farm, including the planting of 75,000 trees and shrubs. The Buhl golf course is free to the public to this day.

@kwind - Our state representative gave the Buhl trustees funds to do a major renovation on the casino last year. It is beautiful. Now it can be rented for various functions.

@lynnb - Thank you Lynn!! It is beautiful. I believe the Buhl golf course is the only free golf course in the U.S. if not the world.

Interesting history, what an interesting building for a casino

@sparkle - Thank you Juliette!! They use to hold dances and other events there. There is a swimming pool on the far side of the building and they casino was used for swimmers to change their clothing. I heard that people tracking water in over the years paid its toll on the wood floors. A couple years ago our state representative presented a check to the trustees for a vital remodeling. The building is now available for things like wedding receptions and class reunions. I have no idea why it was called a casino since there hasn't ever been any gambling. But I guess a casino is also a place for entertainment.
