While I was walking this afternoon I saw five toadstools growing at the base of a tree. After I finished I went back with my camera to try and get as low to the ground as my tripod would let me to capture this one.
Great shot. Nicely taken and a very photogenic mushroom too, with that interestingly patterned top. Either it is a huge mushroom or you did end up pretty close to the ground.

@gardencat - Thank you so much Joanne for your fantastic comments! I have a Vanguard Alta Pro 264AT tripod which can go pretty low. You can use the center post as a boom, the lens was about 4" off the ground. I was about 6' away using my 70-200mm zoom with a 2x extender which put me pretty close. The toadstool was about 3-3.5 inches tall. These toadstools start out with a very light pattern on top but as they mature the spots darken.

Don't tell anybody, but this was my second trip back to shoot this toadstool. I had tried earlier in the day and failed miserably. There were extraneous plants growing around it which I tried to either remove or move for a clean background. Plus where they were growing restricted me from changing my camera angle for a clearer background. So when I returned I remembered that I had a black piece of stiff plastic in my car. I placed it behind the toadstool giving me the black background. I am going to go to a craft store and purchase a piece of black foam board to use in the future. Foam board has a flat finish whereas the plastic has a little shin to it.
