This is a little known area of Laguna Beach featuring an old turret that was built originally back in the 1920's as a staircase for the residents of the adjacent house to allow access to the beach. The whole thing came out kind of spooky.
@pcoulson Thanks, Peter. Yes, that was a 2.5 second shot - I know how you favour that misty water. I love those slow speed shots too. Thanks very much, too, for the fav. I know you don't hand those out lightly.
@888rachel Huh, I thought you had been a follower all along, too, Rachel. OK, I guess it's official now - thanks! Kind of a common law follow, I guess. ;-) I was trying to think what the setting reminded me of, and you nailed it - Harry Potter! Perfect! Thanks for that and thanks for the fav!
@claireuk@dianeburns@bernicrumb@winshez You guys are all so kind and creative in your comments. And you're all right! Yes, Berni, it certainly is not something you'd expect to see in the U.S. and certainly not in Laguna Beach! Many of the residents don't even know about this place, as crazy as that might sound!
@lyndemc Thanks, Denise. I can only hope to come close to the beauty of your shots. This is rare for me - routine for you! I do always love it when you grant me a fav. Merci!
@marmaladeskyes Thank you for the praise and for the fav, Tracy. Seems there's even more to this story. Not long ago, Bette Midler and hubby bought the house that's part of this structure. They put some money into it to preserve it and have since sold it. Now, apparently it's been declared structurally unsound and there is a fear that it may start to crumble. That would be a shame. Glad I got my picture when I did!
Ron, I have yet to produce a shot that looks remotely like this. Not even sure I could. I'd go and mess it up by swimming, hiking, climbing over to the base of this (questionable safe) structure and attempting to macro it to death. Problem with that would be I'd also be messing up your excellent photo op.
40 years our here and I've never even heard of this! What a gorgeous image! And when I have some time to focus and practice, I'll be asking you for some setting directions for my camera to capture water movement like that (as you did under the pier!) or the present, I've tried with Big Zero success!
@Weezilou I've found the best results come when the sun has already gone down. To the naked eye it seems there is not nearly sufficient light, but to the camera there is plenty. Being able to keep the lens open for 30 seconds of more produces some very unique results. A tripod and wireless shutter control are essential. I'm guessing we'll see you down in Laguna Beach tonight around - and just after - sunset?
Thanks for the nice suggestion, but perhaps not this evening. We went to brunch at Duke's with friends and stayed out on the pier afterward until 3. Enroute home I stopped for some HDR images of HB HS and the civic center, so I think I maxed out for today... Where exactly do you hang your hat? You seem to know of some wonderful areas I haven't spent much time in and would consider a meetup for photography before we leave. Then if you think we're fair dinkum, perhaps you'll want to come see us in NS :)
@Weezilou I'm in Ladera Ranch, Louise. I work across from JWA on MacArthur. I'd love to get together and trade a photo op or two some time. I'll hit you up via email. I know you're outta here by month's end. Hopefully I won't have to run out of town before that point.
@stray_shooter from your many travels, I was beginning to think you bunked at JWA! Pick a day and we'll see if we can't make it happen...on the road 6-17...and for the next 5+ months the meetup has to be NS... Safe travels!
