Baby Hummingbirds by stray_shooter

Baby Hummingbirds

I have a family situation on my front porch. Looks like tight quarters for these newborns. For perspective purposes, that nest is no more than 2 inches (5 cm) wide. It's quite tiny - and so far out of the view of the neighborhood crows.
omgosh!!! What a catch!!! So very cute!! Fav!

Wow, what a strange shaped nest and a great find. It looks a bit of a squeeze. Maybe Mum and Dad are a bit new to this building lark.

What a find! Birds are the most amazing engineers. This nest is amazing, and so are the tiny things inside it. Neat that you have this bit of entertainment right on your front porch.

Anita pointed me your way with this photo; aren't they just wonderful?! We have an annual nest-builder in our fichus trees and Ken spotted her nest yesterday, within a week of when I photographed her there last year! What fun it is to build a calendar of photos to which we can refer back! Keep an eye on these two and send more!

OK, you and @Weezilou are really making me jealous now, and I will be out with my zoom lens trying to spot a hummingbird nest somewhere in our yard, or our neighbors'!! Those are the cutest things, and I love that nest that looks like a Russian fur hat! I have adult hummingbirds coming around to feed on our flowers, but I have never seen a nest! What a great find and capture!!

@panthora Now thins might be difficult for you Osia, but if you get yourself a glass of wine and find a comfortable chair in your back yard, just sit and watch the hummers. If one has a nest, she'll reveal it... After watching her tuck into the same spot a few times, go for a look... (It helps to have a couple sets of eyes looking for it...you can be looking right at it and miss it! Good luck! I really want you to have one also!

@onewing Thanks Babs, yes, it seems they underplanned. I'll be interested to see how the growing process goes.

@gilbertwood Oops, that's what I just said to Babs. If they're still there when I return from my trip I'll try to capture the growing stages.

@pcoulson Thanks Peter. Yes, it seems like an unfortunate way to begin life! I trust that mama knows what she's doing.

@lyndemc Thank you for he comments Denise. It really does kind of put you in your place when you witness nature at work like this. I do look forward to getting home to see the maturing process. These kids - they grow up so fast!

@Weezilou Thanks, Louise! I hope to get back to keep an eye on my new neighbors real soon. Can't wait to see what comes from your situation too! Oh, and no problem hijacking - I do it all the time too - all the comments just makes it look like I'm so very popular. ;-)

@simta Это также первый раз, я видел колибри ребенка тоже. Очень маленькая и очень интересно.

@panthora Thanks Osia, Yes, as Louise stated, they're pretty well hidden. I'll bet you have a few right around you. Better hurry!

@stray_shooter Don't despair... You're certainly popular with those of us who've come to know you, to mention just a few! Hurry home! (You missed nothing today...schmutzy weather straight up the coast...)

I seem to have missed your project the last week or so! Sorry been a little distracted and struggling to keep up, anyway I'm here now and loving your pictures. Spent some time in Aiken South Carolina but wasn't there long enough to se the humming birds come back after the winter. This is beautiful, hope they survive.
