Where Airplanes Go To Die

Day 1 of my current 18 day motorcycle adventure had me traveling from home in Southern California to Tucson, Arizona. Just outside of Tucson is the Pinal Airpark which is basically an aircraft graveyard. It used to be a center where the CIA did all of its secret air operations, but is now home to over 120 aircraft that are either stored, stripped for parts, or scrapped. A very strange site to see in the middle of the desert.
How cool that you could get some photos. When I visited the States in 2013, we drove from San Francisco to the Grand Canyon and passed an airplane graveyard but unfortunately we were unable to stop and get photos.

@salza That sounds like a pretty drive - even with junkyards included!

@maggiemae Thanks Maggiemae, part of the fun of these trips (which of course are fun in themselves) is seeking out some suitable material to collect for photographic purposes. Get ready for some variety!

@Weezilou I did not know that you spent time there - you wouldn't believe how much it's grown - Phoenix too. Thanks for stopping by, and I promise to be careful.

@pamknowler Thanks Pam, I enjoy sharing some of the unusual things I see with this group. I'll do my best to bring you along as best I can. :)

@terryliv LOL, Terry! Yeah, I think I've had a ride in some like that too. I truly do NOT miss the plane travel life!
April 16th, 2016
@gilbertwood Thanks for chiming in Denise. Yes, sad, but fascinating too. I failed to capture (in this shot anyway) the overall magnitude of the place. There are truly hundreds of planes - big one!

@dianen Thanks to you Diane. Always willing and happy to share the weird things I see on these trips. And yes, I promise to be safe!

@summerfield Oh, man, I would love to do just as you suggest, but it's pretty heavily blocked off. I heard they did just start doing tours, though. May have to take advantage of that some day!

@tigerdreamer Hi Karen, I haven't gotten to Oz yet, but will be heading over next month for a couple of weeks. Trying to hook up with some of the folks and hoping for the best.

@jyokota Yes, it's one of those things you never consider. Now we know! Thanks for commenting!

@pcoulson Ha ha, yes, well it is pretty hot in the desert. Probably saves a lot of A/C power by taking the top down.

@gaylewood Thanks muchly Gayle. These trips are always full of interesting and unique sights. I'm happy to share with the 365 community.

@simta Спасибо Татьяна. Я никогда не знал, что такое думать существовало. Я думал, это было место хранения самолетов - они имеют некоторые из них в пустыне - но это было, что плюс больше. Это будет весело поездки.

@dianeburns Thanks Diane - I was lucky enough to catch this in the late part of the day. Wasn't happy about the shadows necessarily, but did like the light. Thanks for commenting!

@jin1x I've been to that place in Vegas too! Strange to see some of those signs that you've seen in movies and pictures all dismantled and lying around. Cool at the same time, though.

@stray_shooter Dad became the Director of Public works in Tucson in the mid-50s; he and my mother lived there the rest of their lives. I went to THS, but headed to St Louis for college. Both our girls went to UofA ...Tucson's very special to us...

Gosh, that looks so interesting. I would love to go there.
