in the early 70's, there was a movie titled 'soylent green', a combination of police procedural and science fiction genres. it starred charleston heston. i never saw the whole movie, but that was because there were bed bugs in that second-run theatre my cousin brought me to so we left the movie half-way. but prior to that i've read several reviews and discussions about the movie and the book from which it was based.
in any case, picture new york city in 2022 (yes, folks, in the 1970's time flew slowly so that the twenty-second century to us was so futuristic), with a population of 40 millions most of them unemployed. the streets are filled with homeless people and housing was horribly dilapidated. the people are rationed with food, and soylent green was the newest product. it was a "green wafer advertised to contain high-energy plankton, more nutritious and palatable than its predecessors red and yellow, but alas was in short supply. well, it turned out that the green wafers were actually made from human cadavers, and that was all the plan of the powerful big corporations to curb population growth. and if you go to youtube you will find quite a number of video clips of the movie. watch it with caution, heston's acting was horrible. hahahaha! sorry, heston fans, but that was another reason why i never finished nor had the inclination to see the movie again.
it was that movie that came to mind when i saw the five-plus-two's futuristic theme and coincidentally the madhatters has a 'stories' theme. no, actually, my first choice was "logan's run" but someone borrowed my ankh and never returned it.
what's the green candy, you ask? when i was coming back from my holidays in february we had a few hours stopover in tokyo. we found this kit-kat candies that was apparently very popular and it is the same kitkat wafers only it's coated with milky green tea instead of milk chocolate. since i love green tea, i thought i'd buy a box and have some for partner and meself.
all week i meant yet kept forgetting to buy those green macaroons for the shot. i hate macaroons, but partner loves them so it wouldn't really be a waste had i bought them. it was a forehead slap moment when i realized the green kitkat box had been sitting on the kitchen counter all this time. so it was a no-brainer to use it then i can at least put them in my mouth.
oh, great heavens!!! the box contains ten smaller boxes with three double wafers in each. for the 15 shots it took me to get this, i ate six double wafers. it's awesomely good and i'm now kicking meself in the arse for buying only one box. must check if that japanese food store in chinatown has any of these because i know i would want more! (hang on a minute, maybe it's made with...yaiks! but it's sooooo good!)
thank you, folks, for your visits and comments and for your very generous favs on yesterday's (abstract) sunset sky posting; they are truly and greatly appreciated.
Ha! This shot brings back memories and not particularly good ones! I saw the WHOLE movie and it had a major creepy impact! In fact, one scene was filmed just off the 405 freeway in Los Angeles (on the road where the trucks go up to the dump) and every time we pass that spot, we remark "Soylent Green!" Summerfield, you are most creative!
I didn't see the beginning but caught the end on late night tv. I prefer green eggs and ham. Bet amazon has your candy but beware the shipping internationally sometimes the fee is ok sometimes no
Hi, it's about time we were paired in a get pushed challenge. I admire your creativity and particularly your ability to tell a story with a shot, so my challenge for you this week is a shot inspired by your favourite novel.
@pandorasecho - no, amazon doesn't have it, but there's a link to where you can buy it for a small box which cost US$79. i bought the big box i have for only $15canadian. i don't think i'd be craving for it after i've finished with this as i'm pretty sure i can wait for when i pass by tokyo again. thank you, dixie.
@salza - it actually tastes great, but yes, if i was you and i read this bit first about soylent green, i probably won't eat it either. hahaha! thank you, sally.
@shaunasauna7 - yes, it makes you think if you'd ever live to see something like that actually happens. thank you for visiting, shauna.
@amandal - actually, it was a bit of a hassle to run around the small set up in my hallway. that's because i was lazy to pull out the remote. but the kitkat made me forget that i smashed my knee badly and the wall hit my shoulder. lazy old woman, that's what happens. so, okay, yeah, it was fun! hahaha! thank you, a.
@northy - hahaha! i was thinking you'd enjoy shooting this, especially when i put the foil cover (sans the candy) in my mouth just as the self-timer timed. maybe we should have a 'bloopers' challenge. thank you, m.
