two sundays ago, i accidentally came across a fundraiser for something i forgot what when i went to this little obscure mall east of where i live and i won a canon bridge camera. they were asking for the obscure but actual terms of some items and the word that made me won the camera was "scabbard". a scabbard, shown above, is a protective sheath or covering for a dagger or knife or scissors. the saturday night before that, i was making a list of words that start with the letter s for my self-imposed challenge for this month. (we did the "o for october" challenge last year so i thought i'd do 's' for this month.) i could've contented myself calling this a sheath but i knew there was a more proper term. having lived in the sultanate of oman for more than three years, i thought i ought to know the proper term for this. so that was the one time i thought the internet was really of major usefulness because the term "scabbard" came up in my search. and fate would have it that the next day, it was the term that earned me enough points at the fundraiser's to have won the camera.
so there you have it, a photo of a scabbard, this one a protective sheath for an old set of scissors and letter opener that is over a hundred years old. it belonged to the american husband of my father's aunt, one of the discards that my mother rescued from the old house, the scissors of which she used making gloves for an exporting company. she also used to cut our hair with the scissors.
and look, there's a yellow box of tissue paper! in support of marta's @whimsicalgrateful month of yellow project in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness month.
thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are extremely and gratefully appreciated.
Love this, the title makes me think of knights and swords!
Apologies for not commenting recently but there was entertainment every evening; wifi was sporadic in Dorset and the clutch on my car died an honourable death! All back to normal for. Few days so time to catch up.
@grammyn - and would you believe my clumsiness, i picked up the scissors to put them away and i nipped my new organza scarf. i was quite upset when i remembered there are some people in the world who don't have any other clothes to wear except the ones on their bodies. :-P
@summerfield Oh, No! I know how disappointed you must have been but you are smart to recognize it as a FIrst World Problem! We would all do well to remember that on occasion!
Wow, yellow AND a scabbard in one photo!! Loving your dedication, and so excited for your win! I am sure you are going to put that camera to good use in no time at all! Of course, that is, if you want to cross over to the dark side...;-))
