an abandoned, dilapidated barn and silo on kishwaukee valley, northwest part of illinois. this is the only pov possible as we were just passing through this on a turn and the driver was not in the mood to stop for more than half a minute as he was, i think, in badly need of finding a loo.
i have no idea why, and i suppose i must set on a search for answers, there are so many of these dilapidated barns that are left to mother nature to decide what to do. they do make for an excellent photo opp but still, why? it certainly doesn't make the landscape any better, at least i don't think it does. what do you think or why do you think?
the snow that battered the midwest had certainly stopped in the by midnight last night and the roads had been cleaned up that made for a safe and speedy drive. our drive yesterday to carol stream where my brother and his family live took more than three hours when it would have been about just over two hours. we were going to drive back northwest but we decided to stay at a hotel near the state border and continued on our journey in the morning.

thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are greatly appreciated.
p.s. - happy to be in the final five for the weekly theme "jolly". lookie here you need to scroll down past the last winner's photo.
I know some rich places buy old barns to use the wood as interior paneling, but I think the why, is bigger, more industrialized farms use giant, metal industrial type barns. These are from smaller, more family operated farming days
i love the colour and textures - great find
I actually think they add to the landscape - not really good environmentally though I guess - I love their character
They are a sad reminder of the urbanization of our society! As you said they make a great photo op though! this one is a beaut with the snow! I think l would have cloned out the power line but I still gave it a FAV!
Gorgeous red barn, and it looks so striking against that white snow, and with that silo anchoring it on the right! I have always loved old barns, and have sometimes thought that I would like to own one and renovate it to live in.... So glad you were able to snap this shot in a hurry! FAV!
I have just spent the past 10 days driving through the south of Australia and I passed many a stone house which too has been left to the elements. Slowly they crumble to dust, sometimes accelerated by theft of a rock here or a rock there which may be of use to another restoration somewhere. Often the trees become magnets and bits and pieces of shit from these old stone houses wind up at the base of the trees. Why? People must think that old rusty crap and rolls of wire need the shade?
@voiceprintz - i thought i saw an email in october from you to bill that you were not going to be after Christmas. we'd have loved to have seen you, you know. we actually went to carol stream on monday morning in the middle of the snowstorm and our day trip ended up with us staying at la quinta at hoffman estates. we wanted to call you but that previous communication came to mind. in hindsight we should have checked as your plans might have changed. also we had an appointment on tuesday at noon in madison. sorry for the confusion/faux pas. :-(
