in high school i learned to play the guitar by myself with a bit of coaching from my cousin. he played in a band and would leave his electric guitar in our house to keep his drunkard father from selling the guitar for booze. i bought a songhits magazine with guitar chords in it and learned from there. then cousin bought a folk guitar and i'd bring it to school. one of the girls in class could also play and one day we got a gig at a beer house a bus ride from school near the red light district. we were the opening act so that we started at 4 in the afternoon and we'd play for an hour or two. we'd fold our uniform at the waist so we'd have short skirts and take off our socks to look a bit sophisticated. we had no name as a duo because we alternated singing anyway. one day, however, two men came and sat at a table, did a double take at us. i leaned over while she was singing, telling her i gotta go because one of the men was our neighbour. she abruptly stopped and whispered the other man was her neighbour, too. we left the stage and the manager got mad we stopped and the resident entertainers hadn't arrived yet. i said i have a stomach ache and my friend said she felt like throwing up and that maybe the fried pork we were fed were bad. we asked to be paid as we prepared to leave but the manager only gave us ten pesos instead of the fifty we normally got. we didn't complain we just took the ten pesos and left in haste. if those neighbours would talk to our parents, we'd be sure to be in real trouble as our parents didn't know about our gig. and that was the end of my singing career 🤣 while she went on to sing in tv shows and clubs.
I continue to be amazed and impressed with the stories that accompany your magnificent photography. What a wonderful subject for today’s prompt and done so well.
I looked at this guitar the whole time we were playing pigs and wondered what sort of photo it would show up in. No wonder you were humming. fun story.
@kali66 - no, there's so much memories stored in my head. an old friend found me today and we were on the phone for almost two hours. he and a few other former classmates of ours had a meet up a couple of years ago and were debating about an incident that happened in our fourth year. four of them had different versions of the event, until someone mentioned that i probably would know because i was good at remembering details. i recounted the incident in detail and he was amazed at my recall, even the names of the people involved. then we got to talking about other things and i had a good time retelling our adventures in high school. and then we grew up. 😂
