My Grandfather by susiemc

My Grandfather

My Grandfather was killed on the 17th June 1916, two weeks before the start of the Battle of the Somme. He was a tunneler (having been a miner before the war) and was laying explosives underground in preparation for the battle. There was an explosion. He never came home. His brother died two months later during the actual battle.
So sad how many died in this War to end all wars, and yet still we fight them. Wonderful picture.

How sad for your family to loose 2 brothers in these senseless wars. At least you have a grand photo. Thanks for sharing

My Grandfather was at Ypres - he was gassed but survived & never really spoke about it - they were from a stoical age. Sorry I have not been commenting much but I have been viewing

No winners in war. Just sadness. Lovely tribute shot, unusual too, makes it all the more special

I know you have their poppies, Sue, to pass on to your grandchildren. We should hang our heads in shame that we are still unable to live in peace.
