St Andrew's Church, Covehithe

Here is a church built within the ruins of a much older, larger church. The original church was built in the 15th century. The church was always out of proportion to the population of a village which never exceeded 300 people and is now down to fewer than 30. In 1672 the roof was dismantled and a smaller church was built within the ruins, using material from the earlier structure. The thatched church now stands beneath the original tower. Sadly the church's days, along with those of the rest of the village are numbered. The waves are gradually eating away at the cliffs which are crumbling. When the original church was constructed the village of Covehithe was probably 2 miles from the shore, now it is almost at the edge of the cliffs.
Fascinating that they built a church within a church. Interesting story too.

It still looks majestic even in its ruined state. Sad that it will eventually fall into the sea.

Great shot. Have you been to Dunwich? It used to be one of the largest ports in England, but was destroyed by erosion. It has a small museum which tells it's fascinating story. You could also walk on Dunwich Heath.

Wonderful capture of this fascinating church.
I think remember seeing this building when we did a 'Crumbling Cliffs' walk from Southwold to Kesslingland a few years ago. I also remember seeing dead tree trunks sticking up from the sands below, one my most memorable walks in the days when I could walk good distances !!
Thanks for sharing, Fav
