I had a feeling that we were going to be treated to a lovely sunset last night, and as I'm always inspired by the beautiful scenes I see on here, I thought I would try capture my first one.
I quickly took myself off to the river thinking that the bridge and derelict pump house would make an interesting foreground.
I soon realised the pump house was not the best of choices, and despite going through just about every setting to lighten up the sky this was the best shot I got.
I like to get as much sky as possible for sunrise/sunset shots with very few interferences Suzanne. Still need some of the ground though to maintain perspective.
lovely capture Suzanne, the colours are lovely and rich, showing movement in the clouds. Also liking how you have captured the buildings nice contrast with the sky. fav
@paul10 I'm told it's an old pump house, like most derelict buildings, it's quite an eerie sight. It has lots of local legends, probably none of them are true so best not to repeat them!!
This is a nice shot. I hesitate to advise on the camera settings, as I've never managed to get a good sky shot myself! With this type of shot, the auto-exposure on the camera will usually struggle to get the optimum setting as the contrast between the sky and the buildings is so stark. So you will have to go manual, or set exposure compensation in one of the semi-automatic modes.
@peadar Ahh, I feared it could mean a manual setting. I sense more angst coming my way :-) Lots of practice is required me thinks, also a wiser choice of location! As always thank you for the input.
Like the sky colors and the neat clouds. Isn't this site amazing - so much to learn and so many willing to help - and the inspiration is never ending. A belated welcome to 365..
@suzanne234 Suzanne, I've just had a quick look at your camera's manual. It has an SR/AUTO mode (for Scene Recognition) which might help. You can also set SR modes to your requirement in the Shooting menu - there is a NIGHT scene option, and one for SUNSET, which you allocate to the SP1 and SP2 positions on the MODE dial on top of the camera. Failing that, upload the image to 365 then use PICMONKEY to edit (it's an option on the panel on the right hand side of the screen under "PHOTO DETAILS"). I've never really used PICMONKEY so cannot advise on how to get the best effects but from a brief glance it all looks fairly intuitive. Best of luck!
@peadar Peter, I cant believe you have gone to so much trouble for me!I did try those two modes, and to be honest I can't remember which settings gave the better results! (if any) I really need to have a good practice and take note of which setting I use and get the better results with. I am beginning to understand some of them but yet have no clue on others such as white balance etc, that's a whole new ball game I suspect.. All will come in time I guess! I think its best I stay off picmonkey for now, I already spend what seems like hours choosing which image is best out of two near identical ones:-( not to mention the next dilemma of which would be the best crop! Again thank you so much for your efforts for me today, which I'm still pretty much amazed with.
