I've been working on my get-pushed challenge to "move to the streets and shoot some candid street images" in the city. In this one, I tried to hint at the urban canyon of the tall buildings on either side, and the long row of people walking as they were heading to the train station. The area was quite windy and if you look closely, you can see the 'lean' of walkers as they head into the wind. And you can also see the tips of red flowers on sale for a last minute Valentine's Day gift.
@heidit
Your challenge has me focusing so differently on scenes. I typically try to wait until people have gone so I can get a 'clean' shot. My whole view of the city was different this time, looking instead for what the people can add to the story. Thanks!
@taffy Great job! I am glad that you have a different way of looking at the city now. It really is interesting to see what the people can add to the image instead of just going for that 'clean' architecture or other shot. So happy that you found this challenge useful! I often hear about how windy Chicago is because of the tall buildings in the concrete jungle, and thanks for proving that. ;0) Oh, and yes, I am working towards a degree in education. I should have done this 20 years ago, but life happens and I am more focused now. I had noticed that you were looking towards the retirement end of teaching... I know it can be tough, especially with adult learners, but I find it is the small 'aha' moments that you witness that make up for everything else. ;0) My favorite age group is Grade 6 to adult.
The body posture of the walkers definitely captures "rush hour" mood! And the tips of flowers situates the context so nicely. In NYC, there were two Budget Rental Trucks pulled up on 42nd St with buckets filled with flowers!
@heidit Thanks for the support, encouragement to get out of my comfort zone, and making my first get-pushed such a great learning experience. You'll see from tonite's post (when I get it up) that you've continued to be an influence even when I don't 'have' to do it. You'll be a great teacher! I'll miss it when I leave the university, but plan to keep working with teachers in school change initiatives. And I'm on a project with teachers grade 6 - 12 right now that will go another 3 years. Good luck in your program (which university?) -- and as you embark on a teaching career!
@jyokota I kept thinking I'd capture candids of people buying last minute flowers but not one person stopped and I finally got too cold to keep waiting!
