Water Fountain Triptych by taffy

Water Fountain Triptych

I've been loving the diptychs but didn't figure out how to do them during the theme week. So many were just wonderful to study. I decided to try one today and ended up with these three shots. This fountain is around the corner from our house, near Tufano's Vernon Park Tap, a longstanding neighborhood restaurant. The place is jumping on the nights of Blackhawks and Bulls games, as well as UIC events. Families have been coming here for generations. We're lucky it's so close as it's our 'go to' take out place when we don't feel like cooking. The best eggplant parmesan in town, and great broccoli and shells pasta dish.
For the photos, I was using different settings to try to capture the flow of water in three different ways. The top one, high shutter speed, was about capturing the moment the water was falling -- freeze-framing it. The middle one I had a slower shutter, but not slow enough to turn the water to the velvet look I've seen in others' photos. The bottom one is the longest shutter speed but instead of velvet, it's more like a mist because the water isn't all that thick in it's flow.
The way you've put this together really makes a nice progression- even though the differences are quite subtle. Nicely done!

Really nice use of a triptych, demonstrating the shutter-speed effects. That's a really elegant fountain and I don't know that I've seen it (I haven't been through Little Italy very often)

Nice collection of images. I like the various looks. It's neat to see them all at the same time.

Great study, and looks good as a collage.

Nice! I like the fact that you have used three different exposure times to give differences to the water texture.

This is wonderful! Well done on showing how the shutter speed affects water. Love the movement and textures.

That's a great way of showing your skills at choosing shutter speed. Looks great as a triptych :)

Thank you all for viewing and commenting. I so appreciate the support.
Annette -- a photo walk in Little Italy would be a fun thing to do something. Italian Sports Hall of Fame, Joe's statue, the fountain, all the iron fences, lots of urban decay and rush available, some street scenes, tattoo parlor, Italian restaurants, Mario's Italian Ice stand (not sure when it opens), etc.

Interesting experiment. You need more aeration to get velvet I think.

Very clever - nice to see the differences - and a great example for those of us who are just starting to mess with shutter speeds.

@danielwsc Ah--that makes sense. It's why it works for waterfalls. I'll have to try Buckingham one of these days.
@jankoos Thanks Jan. It's amazing to me that something I'm doing could be of use to another as I feel like such a learner myself.
