We went to the Blackhawks game tonight and I took my camera along with high hopes for doing motion blur and panning shots. Our seats were high above one of the goals, so my first surprise was realizing that the protective net for us not to be smacked by an errant puck also served to put a checkerboard on every one of my shots. In the third period, I sort of snuck into the mid-section where I had a more clear view. I took a ton of shots and realized that net or not, these shots are above my skill level! I chose this one because you can (a) tell they are playing hockey and (b) there's at least a slightly better focus on the Chicago Blackhawk than the Nashville Predator. We won 4-3, and the Hawks maintain the best record in the league.
PS -- weird green background is unique to 365. On my computer it is more off-white with a greenish tint.
I actually like the blur- since that's what hockey looks like to me most of the time anyway! lol I believe your weird green background comes from the way your camera reads the tungsten lighting and most cameras have a built in setting to adjust for that. I know my rinky-dink p & s does, so I'm sure your Nikon must have it too. Otherwise there is probably a way you compensate for that in your settings, but knowing that information is beyond my skill level at this point!
I like how the one skate area is clearer showing the motion in the rest of the image. I would find this hard to take a photo of also and you have done better than I. ;0) My husband is in Chicago now and coming home tomorrow. I gave him a list of things to do and see while he was there (ideas from your images). :0)

Thanks Loupy-Lou, Jennifer, Colie, Vanessa, and Barb, for being so positive about the blurred shot. They're fun to try to do but so much harder than they look!
@olivetreeann Thanks Ann -- you are always so helpful. I'll see if I can figure out the tungsten lighting setting as it must be there! And we are likely to be able to get tickets for one or two playoff games which will be fun to try to capture. @heidit Heidi, cool that you noticed! The main thing is focus is that one boot. I hope you husband's had a good time and that he was able to be here today (Saturday) as it is finally a beautifully sunny one and the city is showing itself off quite nicely. I'm curious to know where he ended up going while here!
I'm a big hockey fan, and love the movement you captured. It reminds me of the paintings by Leroy Neiman. My team is struggling to make the playoffs....send good mojo!
i find shooting in hockey arenas is miserable... the lighting sucks, the protective nets and glass get in the way of focussing properly and unless you have spectacular equipment (i don't), it's difficult to get a crisp shot... i kind of like how your action shot came out... did you have to sneak in with that lens? last time i went to a pro game they searched my bags... turns out they don't let you in if you have a lens bigger than 75mm!
Nice shot. Hard to do, but great. Go Penguins!!! :-)
I would play with the White Balance on your camera, but seeing that the Nashville jersey is white, it is the way the light comes "off" the ice. As for the action, play with the ISO and shutter speed see what you like.

Thank you all! Thanks JA for the suggestions, too. @northy, I had my camera hanging on my shoulder and it's a 70-300 zoom, so doesn't look that big when it's at its smallest. And then I had to sneak in another section and just stood there snapping away next to a guard who said nothing.
