Great plans for today to kick off new themes for April and then I somehow threw my back out. UGH! So no photo walking today...plans remain to be enacted.
Instead, this was an image I'd wanted to post anyway, taken a few days ago, of the ceiling of what used to be the Chicago Public Library. It's now the Chicago Cultural Center (photo of the arch from a few days ago is from same section of the building). This is not even the main ceiling (which has the largest Tiffany mosaic in the world -- photo to appear in the future). I just love the woodwork and the quotes at each end. I'm standing below my favorite quote, taking this photo. The quote above me says (note the letter /U/ is carved as /V/:
HE THAT LOVETH A BOOK WILL
NEVER WANT A FAITHFVL FRIEND
A WHOLESOME COVNSELLOR
A CHEERFVL COMPANION
AN EFFECTVAL COMFORTER
Isaac Barrow
The quote at the end of this image says:
A LIBRARY IMPLIES AN ACT
OF FAITH WHICH GENERATIONS
STILL IN DARKNESS HID
SIGN IN THEIR NIGHT IN
WITNESS OF THE DAWN
Victor Hugo
This shot is an HDR of three shots, handheld, so that the grains and the words would be as clear as possible.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs on my two tulip shots -- and those of you who commented on my collage, thanks as that was totally unexpected! Your analyses of what the macro buys us in viewing versus what is gained from the broader view were so interesting to read.
@Weezilou Thanks Louise. The current library -- the Harold Washington Library -- is the one with the huge green owls on each corner. I keep photographing them but have yet to get a shot I'm satisfied with enough to post.
@taffy Oh good...I'm glad to know that's still used as a library. I must have Heather, my daughter, point this building out to me. As for those owls, I think you'd want a high vantage point looking across to them...and I'm not sure where that would be. I wanted a photo of them as well. I'll just count on you to get me one someday ;)
Great capture...lovely composition/crop and great HDR clarity...again superb skill getting this done with a handheld picture. I know how difficult it is...I have experienced it in Italy's churches (e.g http://365project.org/ericdibosco/sharing-and-cri/2014-01-16)
Wow what a fabulous ceiling!! Great capture Taffy especially as it was hand held!! I do hope your back feels better soon. I have suffered with my back in the past and know how debilitating it can be. Take care!!
Such grandeur. And all well above one's head where it's less likely to be appreciated, unless a talented photographer comes along and captures an image to share with others. Beautiful created image, Taffy. Best wishes for your back — may it be pain-free soon. Or sooner than that.
Thanks for the generous comment on my Barn photo. Much, much appreciated.
I love so much about this, first the tones and the beautiful architecture, then the lines about a book being a faithful friend, and the fact it was a library. Big fav!
Also look forward to seeing the Tiffany mosaic ceiling shot!
I love this building! But more importantly, I hope your back is all better. You did a nice job of capturing some very important words and the symmetry and warmth are great.
