The birds of Tanzania were quite varied and striking. This pair was among my favorite for their clown-like faces and the way they kept popping up and down while they watched us, seemingly undecided about which direction to walk and stare, but very curious looking as they glanced our way over and over. Thanks to Helen for reminding me of what they are: white bellied bustards.
Nice shots. All that popping up and down was to help them assess you. Since birds like this do not have eyes positioned in a way that can achieve bifocal vision, they cannot tell how far away you are, and therefore how big you are, with just one eye unless they can see you from multiple positions with that one eye. Viewing you from two positions in quick succession gives their brains the kind of depth and size information that we take for granted from our two forward pointing eyes.
LOL Vikki @summerfield- I thought of the Abbot and Costello routine too!
Fun collage Taffy!
