Junko and I went to one of the Forest Preserve areas north of Chicago, where there are about 40 pairs of nesting great blue herons. It was great fun as the pairs were petty active building nests and interacting in various ways. Watching their behavior, it's clear that bringing sticks is the equivalent of a courting gesture or maybe akin to bringing a bottle of wine?
Check out Junko's shot from today as well, with the perspective of the nest (or the waiting hostess?): https://365project.org/jyokota/365/2021-04-03
