They probably are sitting on eggs, if on the nest.
Our Herons this side of the Atlantic, nest and lay early. They are big enough to keep the eggs / chicks warm and dry if the weather turns nasty. But it lets them be ready to take advantage of all the better weather and an abundance of food through late spring and summer.
Gives the chicks a better chance of survival through their first winter.
Nice capture! I’m pretty sure she’s keeping the eggs warm. The herons in my area are often hard to spot because they nest high up among the palm fronds. Many of the trees are 70-80 feet tall.
