No need to comment. I took this our first night in Hawaii and have been meaning to post it as it's so interesting to me to compare to what the moon looks like at the same point of fullness in the midwest ( http://365project.org/taffy/365/2013-06-24 from last June or more recent partial one from November http://365project.org/taffy/365/2013-11-10). I assume the month can make a difference too. I don't know my astronomy at all!!
What lens did you use to get this wonderful picture? I've about given up on taking photos of the moon as I can't seem to get the settings right to not over or under expose the shot--and I've never grabbed this kind of detail. I really love this!
@bernicrumb Hi Berni. I used the Nikor 70-300 zoom, in this case on a D90 body which is a crop sensor, to get the additional mm's. On the D90, the 300 acts more like a 420 or so. Then, I use spot metering so that the light metering is off the moon instead of an average across the sky, which blows out the moon's light. Finally, I use Aperture processing to up the details and sharpen a bit. If I'm going for huge details and don't mind more graininess, I will use Nik Output Sharpener, but I didn't use that in this photo. Notice, you don't need much exposure (this was 1/80), even with the aperture all the way down to f40 and ISO at 100. Hope this helps!
