Covid Airlines

Day 7 - Alice Springs Airport

At some point, we were talking to a fellow traveller and he mentioned all of the planes at Alice Springs airport so on the way back to the caravan park, we called in for a look see.

Because of its very dry climate, Alice Springs airport is being used as a storage facility for surplus aircraft during the Covid downturn by some of the world's major airlines with billions of dollars worth of aircraft currently parked there.

I tried to find out how many were here but the best figure I could come up with was "hundreds". Many familiar insignias on the tails but also quite a few I didn't recognise.

I had read about planes being mothballed at the graveyard in Arizona and always wondered why Alice Springs wasn't put to similar use. Little did I know.

Very eerie to see this...almost like a graveyard with the tails as markers.
