Iris Foetidissima
Aka Stinking Iris or Roast Beef Plant.
After a couple of days I’ll in bed, I ventured out with Rosie today. I was drawn to a splash of colour amongst the greens and browns in the nature reserve, and found this beauty. Shame about its name though.

A lovely photo and vibrant red colour. I can understand why it might be called Stinking Iris but I wonder where the name Roast Beef Plant comes from?

Apparently the leaves have a 'beefy' smell when crushed, hence roast beef plant. Lovely splash of colour anyway!

Happy to hear you are feeling better. Love this image, I have never seen this plant before. Seed pods are beckoning to be photographed.

A new one for me, they are lovely. Such bright seeds and I like how they hang below the pods, fav.

Thanks everyone. They are very striking - I dragged poor Rosie through a real thicket to get close enough :)

Are they really fetid or is that just botanical hyperbole because they aren't sweet smelling?
