Day 3 of Found Around the House and it's Black (&White) Friday!
I love this chess set - it's a replica of a 12thC set found on the Isle of Lewis in 1851. (more here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_chessmen ). I think you might be seeing more of these pieces on here ;-)
@anazad511 Hi Ana - yes the colour of the 'white' pieces in my set is imitation ivory as per the Wikipedia article. My 'black' pieces are a deep mahogany colour (photo soon!) whereas all the pieces in the original are the same colour, but a different design to differentiate the two sides. Glad you like them... and thanks for all the comments.
Oh, those textures are fabulous. The light seems to be retreating in to the corner to me. Very neat. And the chess set itself is fascinating. Walrus ivory, wow! It's been a while since we've had anything made of that! I love that the players are replicas of the real-life characters (and I wouldn't mind seeing the pawns' design up close :)

And one last thing: Have you been able to take a look at the weekly challenges? Under "Discuss" at the top of the page, there's a "Themes & Competitions" forum - of great use if your inspiration muse ever decides to vacation in California. This week's Technique Challenge is black & white photography. I think this would be a great entry - tag your photo "technique18" if it interests you! http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/20508/technique-challenge-black-and-white-photography
@louuncouth HI Lou - thanks for your kind comments and the info. I'm now following @northy and I've tagged this shot as you suggested. I'm still trying to find my feet here and in photography generally - but I'm here to learn and to participate.
Thanks everybody for your comments. @friend2303 Yes Vijay, it was a gift from my wife many years ago now. I lit this from the back in order to draw the eye towards the King, even though the point of focus is on the Bishop to his right... I think it worked!
