Get Pushed 91

My get-pushed partner this week - Thomas Toth @thomastoth made the following challenge:

Hi Richard. I am your Get Pushed partner this week. I've reviewed your portfolio and you have an amazing eye when it comes to pretty things. Your flower and nature photos, including Maple Blossom, are really wonderful - crisp, clean focal points, rich and wonderful colors. Beautiful.

Well...my challenge for you is to find and take a shot of the exact opposite. I did see some black and whites earlier this month, but I want you to go further. Find metal. Old gears. Rusted out autos. Something that is completely and 100% man made and take a shot. When you process, I'd like you to process in a high contrast, inky black and white. I want to be able to feel the dirt, grime and cold in the shot.

Have fun. Take your eye, which is highly trained for beauty, and find the shot in something metallic, discarded and grungy. :) Have fun!

I certainly had fun - and here's the result...

Viewing on black is even more grungy...
@thomastoth Well Thomas, I certainly had fun with this and I hope I met the challenge you set me. Thank you for an interesting Get-Pushed - I hope you're having fun with yours.

Definitely not pretty things, and great clarity in the b/w

I really like the atmosphere in this -- the dark side of suburban life. Fav for a capture of the reality of our lives.

great shot, it fits your challenge really well in my opinion :)

You fulfilled the mission perfectly. Job well done.

Nice work on the mission! I admire the collection for its textures, shapes, lettering, etc. My eye is drawn to the top right corner, though, so the vignetting hides the sky a bit (it's rather dramatic and wonderful regardless!).

very well done Richard .. the B/W processing really adds to the image!!

This is great. I like the way the b&w makes everything look so clear and sharp. Its amazing how ordinary"junk" can be made to look so interesting with the right treatment. Katharine

Lou
The best thing about this, as it is the exact opposite of what I associate with your work, is that I still I knew whose photo it had to be before ever seeing the name. There's a recognizable thread that runs through your compositional choices and taste for "punch," regardless of subject or color.

Rik
There are some wonderful textures in this.
April 18th, 2014
This is superb, I very much like it and works so well in B&W
April 18th, 2014
Great capture, and black and white sets it off perfectly.
April 18th, 2014
Awesome work Richard! You have successfully completed your Get Pushed challenge! Well done!

Fantastic response to your get-pushed challenge. So much to like - love the shapes, textures, chaos and brilliant processing.
April 18th, 2014
nailed it!!!! such a fabulous response to your push!
April 18th, 2014
@thomastoth Thank you Thomas for your nice comments - it's good sometimes to be forced to think outside of the comfort box.
April 18th, 2014
@louuncouth Wow Lou, that's quite some compliment, I hadn't realised that I have developed a 'style'; I just call it 'having the right feeling' about a shot before I post it.
April 18th, 2014
@jocasta Well thank you Joy - I hope I can make you as happy tomorrow!
April 18th, 2014
@darylo Thank you Daryl - the treatment of that patch of sky was, for me, an important part of my composition as it sets the mood of the shot.
April 18th, 2014
Well you really met that challenge spot on and so very different from your usual style but I love this image, perfect in B & W and great detail.
April 18th, 2014
Richard this is a wonderful B & w; has all the grayscale, tones and textures. Love the overall composition and the wide angle which included the sky on the right adding even more interest. fav
April 19th, 2014
Richard, I am overjoyed that you joined the get=pushed challenge, though I am quaking in my boots thinking what you would challenge me if you were ever my partner. And this is fabulous. To think you weren't sure about it. Think I'm going to fav it.
April 19th, 2014
Really interesting. Fav. Love the composition, tones and texture.
April 19th, 2014
Well done Richard - you certainly grasped the challenge and that's a really interesting shot
April 19th, 2014
You totally rose to your challenge Richard. Wonderfully grungy and that patch of threatening sky is the perfect touch to set this off.
April 19th, 2014
Great challenge. You have fulfilled it very well
April 19th, 2014
I think you responded to the brief in spades. Love your work.
