The Church of St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich by vignouse

The Church of St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich

A church has stood on this site since the Normans set up the new market place in the field below Norwich Castle in 1075. The current building was begun in 1430 and consecrated 25 years later and is in the perpendicular style.

As well as an exceptional building, St Peter Mancroft has a fine collection of medieval and renaissance treasures, 18th century monuments and is well-known for the English art of change ringing on church bells. Which is where I come in because, as child of 12 years old or so, I spent many Saturday mornings in the belfry of this church as my uncle George led the team of ringers in practice.... today's visit brought back memories from 50 years ago.

View on black if you can!
I think the symmetry works really well here. What a beautiful church.

What an incredible structure, so atmospheric, rich in history and a sense of reverence. The carvings in the aisle are very intriguing.

How interesting -- your capture manages to have a magnetic draw on me, as if I were being pulled into the scene. That light is wonderful, especially how it lights up the stones.

I love the history in Europe. The U.S. is so young in comparison. This is a fantastic shot. I really like the lighting behind the stained glass and the writing on the floor. I would love to be able to read it!

These long gone architects, masons, carpenters, glaziers et alia knew what they were about. Your shot renders me humble to see their achievements and skill with which you have realised them. Rave fav!

I love the picture and your story of ringing the bells. How amazing! I wanted to see where this lovely church is, so I googled it and saw similar images to yours. Yours is a better pov than even the one on wikipedia. I like that your pov is lower and picks up the engraving in the aisle. FAV

Wow, wonderful space and excellent capture!! Such wonderful light illuminating the pews and the stone floors....this place has a wonderful spirit, and it is only apt that it touches you so deeply with your childhood memories as well. It's interesting how much emotion these sacred spaces can evoke....I could not stop crying when I visited the church from my childhood years later, and a flood of memories washed over me! FAV!
