Encouraged by your kind comments on the 'departing Blue-Tit' from yesterday, I spent some more time today photographing the birds at the feeders nearest the house. At the bottom of the feeder a Great Tit is patiently pecking away from the outside while a Blue-tit is performing their favourite trick of diving down inside the feeder to capture a whole peanut.
At the beginning of Winter, only broods from previous years know how to do this but by the end of Winter they have all learned how to do it. The Great Tits and the Green Finches are too large to turn round and climb out again so they have to work harder for their food.
Finally, an incoming Blue-Tit was startled to see the 'diver' emerging with his booty and has deployed his 'air-brakes'.
