A final image (probably!) of Mr Yellow Spider (aka Flower Crab Spider) showing how it hides deep down in the petals waiting for an insect to come along. It's known as a Crab Spider because it can walk sideways and backwards which spiders normally can't do: if you look closely you can see that it has eyes (not all visible here) that cover a full 360 deg range of vision.
Where most spiders wrap their prey in silk to immobilise it, the Crab Spider relies on this extra agility to trap its prey - they can spin silk but only use it to protect their eggs until they hatch. It is smaller than you might think, scarcely 10mm from mandibles to the end of its carapace, but it does have very long legs.
Great photo and nice details on his face. We have these two but they are white and we call them crab spiders. They are quite small and hard to find, unless one sees their web first. I find them absolutely fascinating... nice job!
