Paimpont 2018: Day 235 - Tree Loving Farmer

Whilst most farmers around here hack even the field perimeter trees almost to death, this one is content to leave this little copse right in the middle of one of his prime fields... I hope the habit catches on.

It works on black or white but, inevitably, on black does it best for me.
Nice to see some nature amongst the agriculture!

It must catch on! If not, them and their sons and daughters may find they have nothing to farm!

I should think so too. Why on earth do they hack down the perimeter trees??

@golftragic Because the branches create shade and the trees suck up moisture at the field edges which reduces crop yields. They're not allowed to cut the trees down so they cut off all the branches except one at the very top of the main trunk which is known as a 'tire seve' - a sap puller - which keeps the tree 'alive'.

@vignouse Having been a farmer for 20 years in a past life I get that Richard, but surely having shade and shelter is also important. And the trees only take up a little bit of the paddock space anyway.
