For my single subject I've chosen the White Knight from a replica copy of the 12C Isle of Lewis chess set: today, the White Knight receives the Bishops' blessing on his endeavours.
Splendidly dramatic. Can 'see' similarity of behaviour in this gathering and that of Oliver Cromwell and his allegiance to Henry Vlll, as portrayed in Hilary Mantel's 'The Mirror & The Light'. Highly recommended.
Oh I didn’t know they were called Bishops in English! The Italian name is entirely different and has an entirely different meaning: we call the piece “alfiere” (from the Spanish “alferez” - and this from the Arab “al-faris”, the knight) and it is the standard-bearing officer. We still have a rank with that name in the Italian Navy. Sorry for being naif
