Like many large cities, Rennes has its share of rather elegant 18th and 19th century town-houses with large gardens - sadly, these are much sought after by developers. When one comes onto the market, it is snapped up immediately and the site 'redeveloped'.
This one was particularly prized because of it's proximity to the River Vilaine and it is only 10 minutes walk from the city-centre - and, even better, there is room for two developments on this particular site. Each apartment will sell for around the price of the whole site so it's a lucrative proposition for developers and planning is usually granted as there is a shortage of city-centre accommodation.
It'll look better when it's finished and occupied...I hope. Yet there will inevitably be a continuing demand for properties like this...and the architectural heart of cities will likely become something of the past.
Maximize profits. Quantity before quality. In addition to biological pollution, there is also an optical one. Progress?
The unbridled urban sprawlis is unfortunately also rampant in this country. My birthplace is only in the memory.
