Home-Builders...

One of the trees in our garden is a 12m tall 'Christmas tree' that we planted when it was about 1m tall. Mrs S noticed today that in the shade beneath, ants were busy constructing an anthill.

We were fascinated to watch them bringing individual fallen pine needles and then handing them over to the 'placers'. By dusk this evening, all the ant's were inside and the whole of the mound was neatly and effectively thatched with pine-needles.
Wow... what a cool story & awesome picture.

Nice close up of the ants building their nest. I've never seen an anthill covered over with pine needles. Maybe that's why. It's camouflaged.

Fascinating and interesting two-tone ants. The ants I’ve seen come in different sizes and types but they are all black all over.

Aren’t they amazing? I found a similar hill on my hike on Friday

Oh my! Reminds me of ant farms we had as kids, only this is in the 'real' world.

They certainly make a fascinating shot...and in macro. Hope they don't abandon their 'Hill'. If they do, needs must find the replacement and/or maybe there are more....undiscovered.
