Egg Maintenance by vignouse

Egg Maintenance

The ants with the anthill beneath a 15m tall pine tree in the garden were busy all day relocating eggs into different parts of the nest depending on maturity and temperature. One ant brings an egg to the the edge of an entrance/exit; a second carries it clear and places it for a third ant to take away and relocate in the cooler exterieur regions of the antthill.

Totally fascinating!
I took a very similar shot last week, but hadn't got round to posting it yet. Mine didn't have eggs though, they were busy repairing the hill after something, possibly a Woodpecker, had damaged it.

Fascinating to watch. Remember ant farms captured between two panes of glass when you were a kid?

Since yesterday...our ants have moved. Good call! Their new abode is a rockery, whereas that which they have vacated, was more or less level. They skirmish hither, thither and yon...fastidious in their pursuit to always support the whole community. Fascinating!
