French knitting

When you mention to a friend that you remember doing this as a child then she kindly gifts you the cotton reel with nails in place.
I think hubby regrets asking what I am going to do with it!
This is great!

Oh I remember French knitting, it kept me occupied for hours when I was a child. My kids enjoyed it too. It is good you have old fashioned cotton reels to carry on the craft.

FAV beautifully simple photo with fabulous light. Plastic spools today will prevent future generations from learning this

Oh this was so exciting right at the beginning when you started to see it come through the other end of the reel. I used to make mats, ,mats and then more mats haha!

Lovely look at the cord you're making and the process. I stlll have the tool that I got as a child to do this. We called it 'spool' knitting. Now I'm dying to know what you told your husband.

What great memories of my childhood days this picture brings. As children we used to compete who makes the longest reel and we used to use them as a harness for a friend to act being the horse. Thanks for sharing this lovely image.

We used to call it "corking". Do you remember you coiled buy painted wooden soldiers with four pins in their head?

Great shot and what a memory. I didn't know it was called French Knitting. @sangwann and Dione is right. That's what we used to do with the multicoloured result. Dione, I had one of the longest "tails" at my school:)
