Kitchener's Island

This is a botanical garden in the Nile, also included in our felucca tour.

It was set up by Lord Kitchener, who was awarded the island, cleared of all Nubian inhabitants, in recognition for his military achievements in Sudan.

Kitchener planted the island with dozens of species of trees from all over the world, including the Red Silk Cotton tree (a type of ceiba), an Indian bean and the touchingly named Sorrowless Tree.
