Beach near Gisborne, Poverty Bay

Cook was the first European known to set foot on New Zealand, and arrived in Poverty Bay back in 1769. Annoyed by a hostile welcome and inability to get any proper provisions, he named it Poverty Bay.

The bay is now dominated by the bustling port, taken over by the export of pine wood. This beach, round the headland, is perhaps more like what Cook first saw on his arrival - a pleasant, pristine, green environment.
