I'm not keen on magpies, and wasn't too impressed when a group of 4 made themselves at home around our property. However, I'm devastated tonight, when the one on the left flew into our glass doors, and stunned him/her self. He managed to flap his way up the grass slope, then stopped. I thought he'd died, but then to my amazement, two of his friends flew in, and set about pecking him into wakefulness. He obviously came round, but still wouldn't fly. The one on the left kept standing on him, and flapping his wings, obviously trying to make it move. It tried for 10 minutes to move him, then gave up. I decided, I needed to remove the dead body, but as I approached, it scuttled off, under the fence and into my neighbours property. I suspect it was concussed, but has perhaps broken a wing, and can't fly. I really hope I'm wrong, and that he's still just stunned. I'm certainly impressed by the care and concern the other two took.
I hope it survived. It probably has. We had a rainbow lorikeet hit our family room sliding door a few days ago and it lay on its back for a couple of hours. I thought it was dead and was just about to move it when I noticed it was breathing. It managed to turn upright after two hours sat for another hour in that position before it walked off rather unsteadily towards the frangipani tree and managed to sit in the tree. Eventually a few hours later it disappeared so I gather it survived.
