The Mudlarks

Today I went on a little jaunt around the Waiuku Estuary. These people are known as the Mudlarks. They are a group of volunteers that keep down the invasive mangroves that grow here. Since they have been doing this, there has been a notable increase in the bird life in the Estuary. I was interested to read that the name Mudlarks, came from the down and out people of London who scrounged for anything of value in the mud on the Thames. Looks to me that these guys are doing a great job
Brill capture…they are making a difference. Great reading too

Great shot and interesting narrative. We have some clearing of mangroves here but it is contentious and highly controlled by the council.

@christinav I think there were issues here too.

Great shot of these hardworking volunteers. It is contentious, but there wouldn't be any channel left in the estuary otherwise.
