A really close friend of mine lost her 4-yr old child to cancer 2 years ago and I have been feeling pretty helpless through it all.
This September I want to create awareness about the reality of childhood cancer and have decided to do a yellow colour board, yellow being the colour of Childhood Cancer Awareness month.
Will you join me? I will be using the tag "monthofyellow".
i already have a project in mind for september, an easy one because i will be traveling and may have sporadic coverage. but i can probably do a week of yellow or incorporate something yellow in my posts. for a noble cause by a person i like, yes, i would do it.
I will try to do the majority of my shots yellow to join in this great cause! My Godson passed away at age 4 twenty five years ago due to this damned disease. His mother re-trained as a children's nurse and has been an inspiration to many!
On my way in this morning I noticed 14 yellow objects (although some had other colours too) so I would be able to do 2 full weeks of yellow and I thought for the other 2 weeks I could have B&W photos. It would look great (I think) so count me in.
For those in the UK I am also in the UK and the 1st thing I saw were yellow leaves on the ground, I also saw the yellow number plates on the backs of cars, the yellow of the box for pedestrian crossings and yellow speed camera poles. I know some of the yellow I thought of (or saw) was reflective wear which I use so not everyone will have that option.
@whimsicalgrateful Hi, yes i know the one you mean. Sorry to make you sad, actually today is Daffodil day in NZ - fundraiser for Cancer society who do a whole lot of amazing stuff from research to practical help for families. My brother has recently been diagnosed with cancer and had a malignant tutor removed from his neck. This was a secondary and they've yet to find the primary site. Despite this though he starts an aggressive chemo and radiotherapy regime in about 10 days. Hoping for a good outcome x
@alinz Oh, I am so sorry to hear about Godson's passing away. I am really happy to hear that his Mum had the strength to go on and retrain as a nurse and help others. Thank you so very much for your support. xx
@la_photographic Laura, can I just say how amazing you are? Not only you are planning to help out in creating awareness, but you are making it easier for others to support the cause too. You totally rock! Thank you!!!!
This past April/May I worked with some very inspiring youngsters who were all in different stages of battling cancer. We did 5 weeks of photography classes with them. It was both fun and meaningful and a couple of them were extremely talented! I had in my mind to do a "same September" theme for myself, so I am going to do one week of yellow for you as part of it! I think this is a great idea!
@olivetreeann Thank you, Ann, it's wonderful to have you joining the cause. How old were the children you with? And who organised the classes for them? I wouldn't mind doing something like that here too, it'd be great to know more about it.
I've never done a color-week and thought about starting September with blue as that seems an easy color. But for this cause I'm really happy to try yellow!
I'm trying to find a way to focus on my photography better. I don't know if I can do an entire month, but I can certainly sprinkle some yellow here and there.
Sorry for your friend... I can't even imagine the pain. My daughter just turned 4 this year. I don't even want to think what it would be like to lose her. =(
@timewalker thank you, Pam. All you need to do is take photos of something yellow (you can do this how little or as much as you want) and tag them "monthofyellow". If you wanted too you could also share them on your social media and ask friends to do the same. The more awareness, the better.
@whimsicalgrateful I'll be framing out my month with yellow as I'd decided to a personal "same September" challenge again. So that will be a fun twist.
The organization we worked with is called Pablove. It was started by a couple whose son died from cancer. During his illness they realized there was not much outside support for families dealing with this disease and so after his passing they put their experience and know-how to good use and set up the non-profit organization. I think if you go to Pablove.org you can learn more about it and find out how to apply for one of their grants. That is how the woman who set it up here got the program in this area. The program is great- it is designed to get the kids thinking about other things besides what they're dealing with. We had boys and girls ranging from ages 8 all the way through 18. And they were amazing. The downside was that the program was initially developed in LA (where there's lots of money!) and the gallery show generated enough money to continue the program. We do not live in a really wealthy area and I'm not sure they'll continue our program here. However, we may try to design something similar without infringing on copyright issues with the classes and instruction. So that's what I can tell you off the top of my head. Here are a couple of shots from the gallery show we held at the end of the class. http://365project.org/olivetreeann/themes-and-comp/2015-06-06http://365project.org/olivetreeann/themes-and-comp/2015-06-08
@olivetreeann Thank you for the info, Ann. I looked Pablove up, but they don't seem to be active in Australia. I might still shoot them an email and see if they know of any charities I could get involved with. I really like the idea of volunteering camera in hand. xx
Hi Marta. Great cause and nice idea. I'll be having a go. Never particularly liked yellow, and therefore probably never been looking for it, but I've been out and about this morning and it turns out there's yellow everywhere when you're tuned into it ;) First up will probably be a lemon squeezer which I'll be posting later.
@pistache Thank you, Clare, I truly appreciate it. Yes, definitely lots of yellow about: diggers, toys, flowers, street signs, number plates, food... It's amazing what you see when you start looking ;)
I have come on board late. I'm game to join in although probably will not be able to do something yellow every day. Thanks for getting this thread going, a worthy cause and close to many people's hearts.
@salza yep, please do. Even if you just managed a day, that'd be really cool. It is a cause really close to my heart too, so I am the one who needs to thank everyone for coming onboard. X
@whimsicalgrateful True- they may just be based in the US. If they don't seem to be helpful, let me know and I can at least email you with a little more information on what we did in each class. There are certain components of their program that is actually under copy-right, but the basic outline is ok to share.
Count me in. Just found out about it, so I will start today. A coworker's 3 year old son is currently fighting Neuroblastoma. One of a former student's younger just passed away at 14 years old, a few months ago, from cancer.
I am not sure if this will reach each and every single one of you who took part in monthofyellow. It has been a very emotional month for me and I have been hugely touched by the warmth and support of this community to the cause. I am not sure I have the right words to express the sense of gratitude I have for every photo that has been posted and every mention of monthofyellow that has been made this month. I know that it has made a difference and that is simply huge.
You are welcome Marta. Yellow is not a colour that I usually notice, but I was surprised at how much yellow there is around us. I hope our images helped raise awareness.
no, thank you! i'm sorry couldn't do more than a week but know i tried my best. congratulations on this undertaking, marta. everyone did well with your challenge.
@whimsicalgrateful l was impressed with how you took the time to comment on so many of the postings! I also am impressed that you took the time to thank people that participated! I am mostly impressed with the awareness that you have raised and hope it has done some good!
I wish I had managed more days, a little boy in my dale has an inoperable cancer and it is heartbreaking that he has little chance of growing to the man he could be. I too hope there will come a day when no child or family has to face this terrible disease. Thank you Marta, for the opportunity to share in highlighting the cause. Bless You
Thank you Marta for organizing and also commenting on so many photos! @whimsicalgrateful
I didn't think it was possible to fill a whole month with yellow, but liked to try it for all children fighting cancer, finished it and had fun!
My family, especially my 9yr old, helped me a lot. Today she was allowed to wear yellow in stead of her uniform to school and of course she did, proudly telling her friends about my project too! So we definitely created some awareness!
@whimsicalgrateful
No, thank you Marta! You brought back some wonderful memories of the students I had in the Spring and had me seeing yellow at every turn. If I could figure out how to do a calendar view, I'd put it up here, but since all my experiments have not worked, I'll put this one up instead as it seems the best suited to the theme!
I'm so happy and proud to have been part of this challenge, I started late and only missed out a few days in the end. Thank you Marta for organizing this and your encouraging comments. I was surprised at the shades of yellow I noticed around me. But I think that was a great part of this raising awreness for this cause. I posted my last September pics today, since I was a bit ill the last few days and though this might be y good photo to end up the month
"It could be your child as well" (Es könnte auch dein Kind sein) I think this sums it up for me
@summerfield @nicolecampbell @mittens Even if you could do just a day that would be amazing. Thank you!
Great idea. A friend of mine also lost their 4 year old a couple of months back...
I love yellow and it is the best cause - I donate to the Cancer Council monthly and to the other cancer causes whenever they are about

I missed the beginning, but since then it has been an emotional and blessed month.
What a fun, creative and meaningful month!
