infrared b&w - Tidbinbilla - Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex
This is commonly known as Tidbinbilla Deep Space Tracking Station and is part of NASA's Deep Space Network. It is one of three NASA Deep Space Communication Complex, the others being in Madrid and Goldstone in California's Mojave Desert.
Tidbinbilla, built in 1965, was used to track the Apollo Lunar Module. NASA had built two others in the Canberra area - Honeysuckle Creek and Orroral Valley Tracking Staition which both closed int he 1980s. Canberra has a number of mountain ranges surrounding the city, the tracking stations shelter behind the ranges which helps shelter the dishes from the RF radio noise from Canberra.
I went on a long ride on the Vespa on Saturday, through the national park on the outskirts of Canberra. Even though I have not shared them here, I have taken a lot of shots here over the years but the infrared are new for me. I love the large dish peeking over the trees in the shot in my main album, I have posted another dish in my extras album (couldn't decide which one to share so I shared both).
That is pretty trippy. The shadows tell me the trees should be near silhouettes but they're almost as bright as the sunlight filtering through and around them. Does not compute! Definitely a different take on the subject.
The processing on this makes it look like the world ET might have lived in after he went so pale in the movie. Wonderful processing - the foliage looks quite alien.
