For the past two weeks I have watched the waterfowl who have settled in the wetlands around the bridge crossing the Niobrara River on my way north. Today when I stopped they didn't fly off, and I enjoyed about ten minutes sitting along the roadside snapping pictures. I don't think I've ever seen a Northern Shoveler before. Such a funny beak! He shared this bit of wetland with a pair of mallards, a few killdeer, and some little sandpipers.
