My mother's mother died when my mother was only seven so she didn't have many memories of her. My mother's childhood really ended at that time as her father turned her over to relatives to raise and she never again had the security of her own family. This was one of the few treasures she had that belonged to her mother. It is a beautiful example of cameo work but its greater value lies in the rare family connection.
Oh, definitely a treasure. You know, you made me remember that my father brought home a few cameos from Italy when he was there during WWII. I have a ring that he brought back for his father. I'm out of town now but will have to look for it when I get back! Cameos are so beautiful and this one is especially nice with the pearls along the edge.
Hot Springs, Va 2 weeks ago....Syria, VA last weekend...Wilmington, NC this weekend...home next weekend and then on to Buffalo, NY for a couple weeks...phew!
@mrssmith Here's the other half of the tragedy. When my parents were newly married, my mother got word that her father in the hospital. She went to visit him and there she met his wife and son. So all those years her father had had a stable home and could have provided for her. How world-shaking that must have been for her.
