Satchel's Pizza is a Gainesville institution. Until recently my son's bluegrass group Boilin' Oil had a monthly gig there. The music stopped on Feb. 28.Here is the story from Satchel's website and the inspirational way the community responded:
"On Tuesday night, February 28th, Satchel's Pizza caught fire. As soon as we saw smoke, we got everyone out of the building and called 911. The fire department arrived and spent hours hacking at the roof and looking for the fire. The ceiling in the kitchen has been vaulted so the fire was just creeping around in small cavities looking for air. The firefighters found the fire. They pumped water in the walls. They saved the place from burning to the ground. A big thanks to the folks who fought our fire. Gainesville Fire Department rules!
This event leaves approximately 50 people unemployed until repairs can be done. Unemployment compensation pays a fraction of folks wages. Employees have house payments and kids to support. We've created this forum for folks to contribute to help the employees pay their bills while we put the kitchen and roof back in order."
The owners created an Employee Relief Fund on indiegogo.com with a suggested goal of $20,000. The friends of Satchel's generously responded with pledges of $32,000 and still counting. No government bail out. Just concerned neighbors.
Nice collage- sorry about Satchel's but more power to them! I hope their repairs go smoothly and quickly and that business is better than before when they reopen because that is awesome how they went to bat for their employees.
I'm so glad they were able to get everyone out and get the fire put out before it caused devastating damage. Such a wonderful story of the community supporting them!
