Saints Constantine and Helen's Greek Orthodox Cathedral proudly host this Richmond tradition, always the weekend after Memorial Day. You know how they say that on St. Patrick's Day, everyone is Irish? Well in Richmond on the first week end in June, everyone is Greek! I think I've been attending almost since the beginning. Fortunately I live close enough to be able to walk over, since the parking and traffic is very challenging all week end. The wonderful Greek food, dancing and marketplace are all provided by volunteers from the Greek community. Young children dance in elaborate costumes, teenagers work hard with not a single sullen look, adults of all generations cook and serve. I wish I had a number to report of souvlaki or baklava served, but according to their website, they had run out of the chicken skewers by 4 PM on Sunday, although the festival continued til 7 PM.
Every year they donate part of the proceeds to local charities that serve Central Virginia. The specific charities selected can be found on their website.
This is a wonderful gift the Cathedral shares with the Richmond community. Despite the sun beating down and the heat from the grilling meat, the volunteers stayed cheerful and made it a memorable event. Sunday evening they take a deep breath and take down all the tents, and in a few days start planning for next year's festival!
Sounds like a wonderful event. I'd love to see the dancing and taste the food. I think there is one which is held around here too. I'll have to keep my ears and eyes open in the coming year to see when it takes place. Nice collage!
