Kate and I discard approximately 2000 books each year to make way for the new by removing worn or no longer timely books as well as duplicate titles. We then look for new homes for these books. For the first time we connected with Hassan Fountain who runs a foundation to get books in the hands of children who might not have any otherwise. Inspired by a mother who was a librarian, he has created opportunities for children in housing projects to select books to keep. In 27 months he has managed to distribute over 80,000 books in community centers in Virginia and North Carolina. When he came to the library today, he carefully examined every book to make sure to only take those that would appeal to the children. We were impressed by his energy and vision, and I know Collegiate will continue to support his efforts. What an excellent idea! When I briefly served as the librarian to the small Christian school my boys were attending in the inner city, another librarian from the church we were attending heard of it and she did the same thing as you did- donated all her school's library books to ours. In one year's time we quadrupled the books on that little school's shelves. It was great!
