I am trying to make more portraits and street portraits as this is a genre that I have been rather scared of. What do you think? I would appreciate comments especially on how to improve what I am doing. Thanks in advance.

For this photo I think the hand is distracting. Your subject has a great face (I think wrinkles do add so much character). Maybe make the main focus the face. The hand and the background probably distract from the portrait possibility, especially as the background isn't adding anything and is a bit off kilter. Doing portraits are a bit scary. A couple of times I have been brave enough to ask if I can take a photo and it has worked out well. However, sometimes I just take a long lens and sneak pics.
