The Yellow Flower by alophoto

The Yellow Flower

Yesterday, I noticed the detail for the first time at the top of the yellow dandelion. All of the curliques and tiny sweet parts of the flower. I don't have a macro lens, though, and couldn't get the little parts in focus with my big ol' lens.

My daughter, Emily, saw me laying on the driveway trying to shoot the flowers and she offered to hold them for me for a photo. I love the model that my daughter has become for me (she used to be the family photobomber always shutting her eyes or making a face in photos). Not anymore. Pure sweetness...

I decided yesterday that I want to capture more shots that matter...sweet moments, joy, poignant things. I am not sure how that is going to translate into my project, but it is a good goal. Way to add more pressure to myself, huh?

Happy weekend, my friends.

And here is my alternate shot different angle and processing of Em and her flower: http://365project.org/amandal/themes-challeng/2013-05-10
An excellent goal, Amanda! I love how she's looking down! Great use of selective colouring.

Beautiful capture and love the selective colouring. I think that is a wonderful goal and sometimes it's those kind of shots that we love the most as photographers.

Nice sentiments behind this photo - and i applaud the idea of capturing the moments that matter, because ultimately, they mean the most.

Lovely shot and selective colouring :)

THis is so wonderfully captured. Love this composition and her sweet calm expression.
May 12th, 2013
Beautiful. I prefer this one although her look in the other photo is great :) I used to hate selective colouring but have come to love it when it is done well as I think it has here. Fav!
May 12th, 2013
@thirtysevenways I tried straight b&w, but missed the sweet color in the flower. It lost something. Thanks, Andy. Really appreciate the fav. My daughter asks me "how many faves has my photo gotten:)." Funny how they catch on so fast.
May 12th, 2013
a very lovely shot of your daughter... lucky you to have a willing model and good for you for looking to capture the moments that matter... i pretty much gave that up when i joined 365 ;p
May 12th, 2013
@amandal Mine too. She was very happy with the sunset photo :)
May 12th, 2013
People who mind don't matter and people who matter don't mind.

Don't know who said it, but don't let anyone tell you it was Dr Seuss. That's all I know.
May 12th, 2013
She is a wonderful model. You're so lucky. Gorgeous shot and fab SC xx

@northy I love the idea of shooting what matters. But it's tough sometimes. I don't want my shots to be all family shots (that is boring to those who are not in my family...and me to be honest). It's hard to find things that matter all of the time. We will see what I do with that. I just want to be more balanced in that regard, though...and maybe think twice before shooting flowers. The day after I had this goal, I was down on the ground shooting earthworms. Sheesh!:)

@squamloon Great fun quote. Thank you!!

Thanks so much for your sweet comments of this shot. I know that selective color annoys some people. I don't use it much, but tried b&w and it lost something without the color of the flower. Sometimes it has to be done;-). Thanks for your words, faves and support of my new goal of shooting more of what matters. Still not sure how that will play out. I was taking photos of earthworms over the weekend...geesh.:)
May 13th, 2013
@northy Why did you give up on shooting things that matter?
May 13th, 2013
@northy Your shots do contain a lot of what matters...people and life. That matters:).
May 13th, 2013
lovely capture. Love the selective coloring. I think dandelions are one of a mother's first flower from a child.
May 14th, 2013
@dmdfday I think you are right, Diane. Thank you for your comments:)!
May 14th, 2013
Perfect selective color shot, Amanda.
May 14th, 2013
@btorrey @amandal for almost all of 2010 i did for myself and my family, a picture a day - mostly the kids, diary type shots around the house and personal stuff... and had it printed up in a book... i tried it again for 2011, but failed miserably... the boys were fed up with the camera and i was discombobulated and distracted with other things... i was going to try again in 2012 when joining 365, but the boys were even more fed up with the camera and pictures of them became very unsatisfying... even now, i have comparatively few just "ordinary" pictures (altho' i make an effort to get some periodically)... most of the ones that i end up liking are more "artsy"... and many of the day to day ones annoy me because of stupid wonky things...
May 14th, 2013
Beautiful shot. I love the soft feel of it and great selective colour.
May 15th, 2013
@edie Thanks, lady. There was something about this one that was off. I liked the shot and idea of it, but I think that my processing could have been better. Perhaps I could have desaturated the flower more? I tried to make it more high key last night to replay with it, but the hands became too washed out. Oh well. Good idea, at least...and pretty cute.
May 15th, 2013
Maybe desaturating the flower more...
It's your picture so it bothers you when you don't get what you are after, but we just see it with fresh eyes so I liked it. When you said that I had another look and I can see how that might soften it a bit more. I'm not sure. I do really like it as is.
May 15th, 2013
@edie Thanks, lady. Appreciate your words and relating about the editing psychosis;-).
May 17th, 2013
'Scrolled' a bit through your album, beautiful pictures you have. Love this one too with your lovely daughter c.q. model ! Great b&w with the splash of yellow. Fav! And follow :-)
