I impulsively drove past my local waterfall today and loved the way it was lit in the golden sunshine. I needed the light today. I've been feeling some seasonal blueness from all the dismal gray and cold. I needed some good sunshine and I have a need for color. Lots of vibrant color.
I decided to try to make the water silky today by messing with the aperture. I think that the effect came out pretty nice handheld. And except for my near tumble in the falls, it was a pretty uneventful time. I was crouching on the side, taking the shot and felt the ground giving out under me and scooted back just in time before taking an icy plunge. Shew. A fall in the falls could have made for a better story...ah well. I think I preferred staying dry today.
This is really beautiful....the water is wonderful. It look so cold! The light is wonderful.! Would send you some warmth and sunshine if I could!!! FAV
Really lovely light and glow, and great silky effect! (Glad you didn't fall in too!) We have temps nearly to 40 today, so we are off for a walk ... but still no real sunshine.
This is absolutely beautiful, Amanda. Not just that gorgeous silky water, but the lighting and composition are fabulous. That water is moving pretty fast - glad you stayed out of it!
@seanoneill I hear ya, but unlike some, I tend to do selfies more regularly so I do use the tripod at home when the mood strikes. You know, I think that I may have preferred this more without a tripod, less perfection. I think that super silky isn't really my style. I will try with a tripod if I can sometime (it may not fit there...on the side of a road). Thanks!
FAV! I love how you made the golden light on the waterfall into a silky glide around the rocks. It's such a challenge to turn cold winter days into good photography outings, and you've managed to do it brilliantly (and stay dry!). Great composition, too. If i hadn't read your comment I might have wondered if you were standing right in the middle of the waterfall!
@jyokota Thanks so much, Junko. I really appreciate all of your lovely and thoughtful comments and faves. You home now? Gosh you travel a bunch. Must be awesome as far as photography is concerned!! I plan to try to stand in the waterfall sometime. I considered it yesterday, but didn't want to get my feet wet. Maybe on a warmer day and in the right kinds of shoes.
@amandal I "retired" from my university and daily life at the office so now the world is my workplace, and I have the freedom to travel to wherever work calls. Along the way, of course, the camera accompanies me :) The only problem is that when you travel a lot, your focus is on what's new and different and I find that I don't take the time to practice the skills of photography. I feel that I learn more when sitting at home, challenged to think about how to photograph rather than having a new subject in front of me all the time.
Regarding keeping your feet dry, the people in Costa Rica wore fabulous tall rubber boots! @Taffy has some for wading into the water at her home in Beaver Island.
@jyokota I need some waders or to borrow some. I see what you are saying about the travel and how you think about photography less and just shoot. I probably should think about photography more. Much to learn!!
Absolutely beautiful!! I love the exposure on the water -- perfect! And my boots on the island are Wellingtons that I bought when I was in England. They're great! But since I bought them we now have tons of waterproof boot possibilities here.
like this one better than yesterday's....am guessing they are the same shot....this one is magical....Amanda you better not fall in girl! (spoken in my mother-tone)

Thank you all so much for your lovely comments. I am so far behind with my comments and replies. Really trying hard to not let 365 consume my life this year.
