Mi Familia está Aprendiendo Español

Me, I need to better learn how to work my camera. So not great with proper settings in lower light.

I shot this in Auto, thinking it would be easier, but since they weren't perfectly still, it didn't come out perfect. Stop moving people...freeze!

Settings help please!

Mike's passport is coming in handy as he will need it for his business trip to Mexico next month. In the meantime, he is taking Spanish lessons on a phone app and last night the kids joined in. Often he does it in bed while I am reading, annoying me. Ay papi!!!

And I need to get a passport for our upcoming cruise that is in the works for this summer. So very excited at the prospect of getting away for a week sans kids to celebrate our 15 year anniversary in the eastern Caribbean. Ah sweet tropical bliss. As I type this, I see our yard covered in snow. Can't wait for my toes to touch the sand and to feel the sunlight on my skin. I want a Corona now!:)
I see love! Super shot!

This might be better than reading to the children! Tell him this good phrase: ¿Este alimento me hará enfermo? " Which part of the eastern Caribbean are you going to? I don't have the answer to the settings but will look with interest!

Muy bonita foto de su familia :)

@anazad511 @maggiemae Shoot, I don't know Spanish, but wish I had learned it more. I studied Latin. That helps a bit.

@maggiemae We are going to the Bahamas, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. I've never cruised before and went to Jamaica when I was a teen and still dream of the gorgeous blue green water!

Ah, precious! Cute how they're all interested in what Dad's working on. Is that an Eeyore your oldest is holding? My son (29 now) had an Eeyore as a favorite stuffie.
February 17th, 2015
precious .... never mind the light ..its the moment that matters ... (maybe increasing the ISO may help - but what do I know :-))
I don't know Spanish either .. but guessing our friend Ana is saying its a beautiful family picture ... and I agree .....
@anazad511

@lyndemc Yes, my hubby and I both love Eeyore!
February 17th, 2015
Lovely shot.

Pea
I don't know Spanish I'm either but it's a lovely, natural shot of them all. They look very cosy together
February 17th, 2015
They look very intent on learning! ....cute candid!
February 17th, 2015
Cute shot
February 17th, 2015
Wonderful family shot...sounds like you've a lot of exciting traveling planned :)
February 17th, 2015
They are all so focused on the phone. Nice shot.
February 17th, 2015
It is a lovely family shot. Low light indoors shots without flash require a primie lens. Pick up the fabulous Nikkor 35 mm f/1.8 - it has a Nikon rebate on it right now and you can buy it for about $175. A steal at that price. Set your camera to Aperture Priority, open the lens up (anywhere from f/1.8 to f/2.8), raise your ISO so that your shutter speed is fast enough to not induce shake and shoot away!
February 17th, 2015
You have a gorgeous family x
February 17th, 2015
Upping your ISO will allow you to use a faster shutter speed. You will get more noise, it just depends on your preference, whether you like that look or not.
Beautiful candid family shot.
February 17th, 2015
love this type of family portrait.... so natural
February 17th, 2015
A lovely homely and candid family shot !
February 17th, 2015
@soboy5 Well dang it, good to know it's not me and my darn ineptitude. I just don't have the darn right lens. The 35 is on my list. Thanks!
February 18th, 2015
so sweet
February 18th, 2015
Sounds like lots of exciting things are coming up! I have a lot of photos like this. Daddy on the couch with the kids crowded around, ususally watching something on the computer! But its a nice way to get them all together!
February 18th, 2015
Kids and there daddies are the best:). Mommies, too!
February 18th, 2015
Just love this to pieces! The little ones are so interested in what dad is sharing with them - heartwarming!
February 18th, 2015
@soboy5 great advice
February 18th, 2015
It's the moment that counts and you nailed it. Don't think you can raise the ISO in auto but I could be wrong. Try what Danny said with the lens you have raising the ISO till the shutter speed is fast enough. You are going to love cruising ... Great food , fabulous weather, someone making the bed and cleaning the bathroom every day. My favorite part. What's not to love . So how is juggling home and the job going? Any easier?
February 18th, 2015
@lesip Not great. I quit Mad Hatters yesterday. But easier in ways. I am slowly figuring out working out...on good weeks. This is not a good week.
February 18th, 2015
great capture of a wonderful moment with dad ... even on auto!
February 18th, 2015
Aww, sweet family portrait, Amanda! I like the bit of blur--it gives a sense of "aliveness" to the image. Weather around our neck of the woods has certainly been dangerous for driving--stay safe!
February 18th, 2015
My son works with a lot of Mexicans and his wife is Mexican and he picked it up between the two and can rattle it off like a first language!! The only other language I know is PIG LATIN!!!
Love this photo and it's so cool the kids get to learn a little also!!! I think it's such a cute photo!!! Sandra (daughter-in-law) calls my son Papi all the time!! I asked her what she calls me and she said "mommy"!! LOL FAV!
February 18th, 2015
I love this...the light from the phone is shining so sweetly on your youngest daughters face. Nice family time. We are leaving on a cruise the 15th of March for the Western Caribbean! Did the Eastern about 10 years ago to celebrate our retirement. This is just fun trip with friends. We leave from New Orleans. Are you out of Ft. Lauderdale?
February 18th, 2015
Oh so sweet, I love how the light has lit up Clara's face.
February 18th, 2015
Que bueno! They all look entranced!
February 18th, 2015
This is a wonderful shot, Amanda. I love seeing your family all together in B&W. It is hard to capture low light and not blur at all. You did a great job my friend. I hope he has a great trip and that you guys do this Summer as well. I can feel the excitement in your writing. FAV
February 18th, 2015
Beautiful shot of the family and their concentration! For low light shooting,I agree with Danny G, open your aperture as wide as it will go and raise up the ISO.
February 18th, 2015
Lovely family shot Amanda. Sounds like a great idea although I always wonder how they come up with some of their phrases. My daughter decided to brush up on her French before visiting and one of the phrases that came up was 'Un chat? Merci beaucoup!' - A cat? Thank you very much!!!!!!
February 18th, 2015
@eyesmile Nope, Port Canaveral. That's close to where we have the kids being watched in Orlando:) Have fun on yours.
February 18th, 2015
Can't remember if I've ever written this to you but I think about it every time you photograph your children. No matter how they feel about your project now, when they are older they will be thrilled to see so many wonderful photos of themselves. Wish one of my parents had been artistic with the camera when I was growing up, but I guess that was a different time/century.

Pam
Gran tiro!! Spanish sure does come in handy! You are going to be so ready for the beach after this winter!
February 18th, 2015
@mrslaloggie Aw, thank you!! Now if I can only print some photos of them!!!
February 18th, 2015
great shot
February 18th, 2015
Psh settings:) Look at those faces! Fav!
February 18th, 2015
This is an excellent candid photo! I agree with Danny, that lens is fabulous. In the meantime, you could crank up your ISO and use the lowest number aperture that you can. That lens was the first one I got outside of the kit and it is still a great lens!!
February 19th, 2015
So precious and beautiful!

Meg
This is a really sweet shot!
