Crossroad

Kyoto Japan 1988

I am still reviewing my travel photos and scanning old travel albums. Here's one scanned from a print. It was taken on a street corner in the Gion quarter in Kyoto in 1988, when I was there on a work trip. Hard to believe it's more than 33 years ago since I first went there.

I loved this image of the two women walking together
Great contrast of clothing.

Gotta love the socks and thongs but is she standing on something or is the woody bit, part of her thongs

Charming photo of a charming country. Do you remember the camera and film used? Only for curiosity.

As I recall it was a Pentax and I would most likely have been using Fuji film. I have recently been scanning all my old photos and albums. I scan them at 600dpi to enable reasonable reproduction. @lochoad

The girl on the left is a maiko, or apprentice geisha, and she is wearing okobo, or high platform wooden sandals (a form of geta) which are hard to walk in but, I was told, result in a particular style of mincing walk. There are other differences between a maiko and a fully trained geisha in the way they dress and make up.

Both these girls were on their way to work. @terryliv

What an interesting street shot on so many levels! Glad you alerted me. Have you been back in Japan since this time? I hope so! I have't been back in my homeland since February 2020.

I think it is an interesting shot as well and like you think it is fascinating on a lot of levels. I have liked it since I took it in 1988.

Yes, I have been back to Japan, a number of times since, for work purposes and for holidays. It's always a great place to visit. The last time was in 2016. You were lucky to be able to go in early 2020 with COVID19 restrictions. Where in Japan are you from? @jyokota

Cool picture. We lived in Yokosuka from 2006-2009 and loved it. It was wonderful to be in a different culture and we tried to experience as much as we could. We did make a visit to Kyoto before we moved back to the US

@ankers70 I was born in Tokyo, moved to Okinawa and stayed there during most of my growing up years, returned to Tokyo with my family and then I immigrated to the US. I typically go to Japan at least once a year, and we were there when the covid boat arrived into Yokohama. What kind of work do you do that takes you to Japan?

I've not been to Okinawa but want to go.

I was a planner, now retired, working on a number of international projects. Happy to email you more if you would like to continue the conversation. @jyokota

Nice shot. I like the hundreds of years difference in the style of their clothing.
